Digital Literacies by Nicky Hockly

Hockly, D. (2011, Jamurary). Digital Literacies, ELT Journal, 66(1). doi:10.1093/elt/ccr077

This article offers a more comprehensive perspective of digital literacies. It defines digital literacies by describing their characteristics in depth: the language-based literacies, the information based ones, the connection based ones and redesign based ones. The author sees the role of language teachers as helping learners get not only the language skills needed for communication but also some of the digital skills. The author believes that it is the language teachers’ duty to integrate new technologies into the classroom teaching. But how to achieve that remains a question, even to the author herself. She just listed 5 activities that focus on a number of Pegrum’s digital literacies.

This is one of my favorite articles because it looks more like a literature review of recent researches providing a bird view of the topic.

The author has been involved in EFL teaching and teacher training since 1987, and is a keen user of new technologies.
